Road accidents can happen anytime, and what you do in the first few minutes greatly affects your compensation claim. Many lose out by settling too quickly or signing documents without knowing what they're owed.
What to do at the scene
- See to safety and the injured first — report the incident and call police/insurer.
- Gather full evidence — photograph the point of impact, the damage, licence plates, road conditions, and get witness details.
- Don't rush to admit fault or sign a settlement at the scene before the real damage is assessed.
- Keep receipts and medical records if anyone is injured.
Damages you may be able to claim
Beyond repair costs, an injured party may claim medical expenses, lost income during recovery, property damage, and — in cases of injury or loss — other damages based on the actual harm. A complete claim depends on good evidence.
Watch out with insurers and settlements
Before signing an offer from an insurer or the other party, check whether it covers all your actual losses — once signed it usually binds you and is hard to top up. Accident cases have both a civil side (compensation) and possibly a criminal side.
