Give notice properly, so the right still stands when you exercise it
In many matters the law requires notice before a right can be exercised at all — terminating a contract, evicting an occupant, enforcing a mortgage. Skip that step, or give notice in the wrong form, and a case that should have succeeded can fail on procedure rather than on its merits. A legal notice therefore has to state precisely what the other side has done wrong, what they must do, by when, and what follows if they do not. We issue notices in our capacity as your lawyers: reviewing the contract and the legal basis before drafting, setting a period that is reasonable for the matter, and serving it in a way whose receipt can be proven. We also draft replies for people who have received a notice and are unsure how to respond — where answering badly, or saying nothing at all, can cost more than most people expect.

Start with the deadline stated in the letter — but the more important point is to have a lawyer read it before you reply, because what you write back can unintentionally admit facts that are later used in court. Staying silent is often no safer, since it can let the other side move straight to the next step.
Some contracts specify exactly how notice must be given — in writing, to a stated address. Where they do, notice given any other way may simply have no effect. We read the notice clause first, then choose a method that both complies with the contract and lets receipt be proven.
There is no single figure that fits every matter. Many contracts set the period themselves; where they do not, it depends on what is being demanded — paying a sum and clearing out of a building are not the same thing. Allowing too little time gives the other side an argument that the notice was defective.
In practice a letter from a lawyer more often brings the other side back to the table than escalates matters, because it signals the issue has become formal. Outcomes still depend on the individual case, and we do not guarantee any result. Where you want to preserve a commercial relationship, we can keep the wording firm without closing the door on negotiation.
A demand letter is for when what you want is money — payment by a set date. A legal notice is for when you need the other side to stop, leave, terminate, or put something right. Where a matter involves both — vacating premises and paying the arrears, say — we can combine them in one letter.
